Somaliland is a year-round destination, but not every month feels the same. The capital, Hargeisa, sits in the highlands and stays pleasant for most of the year, while the coast around Berbera can be fiercely hot in summer. Add two short rainy seasons, Ramadan and a handful of national holidays, and choosing your dates makes a real difference.

The best time to visit Somaliland: the short answer

November to February is the most comfortable time for most travellers. In Hargeisa, average daytime highs are around 24–27 °C, nights drop to about 12–13 °C, and it hardly rains. On the coast in Berbera, highs are a much more bearable 28–30 °C than in summer. Clear skies, cool evenings and easy sightseeing: this is the season to aim for if you can. Hargeisa: mild all year

Hargeisa lies at about 1,334 metres above sea level, which keeps it far cooler than the coast. Even the warmest month, June, averages a high of about 31 °C, and nights stay fresh all year.

Berbera and the coast: plan around the heat

Berbera is a different story, and on the coast the best time to visit Somaliland is the cooler half of the year. From June to September, average highs reach about 40–43 °C, with July the hottest month. Rain is rare all year: the town gets only about 52 mm in a typical year. For beach days and walks around the old town, aim for October to April, when highs sit around 28–33 °C. Read more in Berbera: Where the Desert Meets the Sea.

The green seasons

Rain matters when you choose the best time to visit Somaliland. There are two short rainy seasons: the Gu in April and May and the Dayr from August to October. In Hargeisa, most rain falls between April and September. In the highlands around Sheikh, the hills turn greenest in the rainy months. If you love landscapes and photography, the weeks after the rains are beautiful.

Events worth planning around

Ramadan, Eid and the best time to visit Somaliland

During Ramadan, life slows down by day and comes alive after sunset, when families gather to break the fast. It can be a memorable time to visit, as long as you plan for it: many restaurants open only in the evening, and visitors should not eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight hours. Our guide to Somaliland etiquette explains how to be a welcome guest during Ramadan and all year round.

In 2027, Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 February, with Eid al-Fitr around 9 or 10 March, and Eid al-Adha around 16 or 17 May. These are astronomical estimates; the exact dates depend on the sighting of the moon. Our guide to Somaliland food explains what to expect at the table.
