Ancient trade, living traditions, defining moments: Somaliland history and the story of a nation.
Explore Somaliland history
Somaliland history stretches back thousands of years. In the first century AD, merchants from Roman Egypt sailed to this coast for myrrh and frankincense, and the trees that drew them are still tapped today. For generations, communities also kept order through xeer, an unwritten law held by elders and built on agreement.
Modern Somaliland history turns on two dates: the first independence on 26 June 1960, and 18 May, now celebrated as Independence Day with flags and parades in Hargeisa. To see the story up close, visit the new national museum in Hargeisa, where protectorate-era stamps, letters and paintings bring the past to life.
